Common Microwave Problems We Fix
Microwave runs but won't heat
A failed magnetron is the most common culprit when the microwave hums along but food comes out cold. We stock replacement magnetrons for most major brands.
Turntable not spinning
A worn-out turntable motor is usually to blame, though a cracked turntable glass tray can also throw off rotation. We carry both the motor and the glass tray.
Door won't latch or microwave won't start
A broken door latch or a burned-out door switch will prevent the unit from starting — microwaves won't run with an open-circuit door switch as a safety measure. We typically stock all three door switches a microwave uses.
High-voltage components failing
A bad high-voltage diode or high-voltage capacitor can cause a loud humming sound and a complete loss of heat. These are small, inexpensive parts — but handle them carefully, as capacitors can hold a charge even when unplugged.
Control board errors or unresponsive touchpad
When buttons stop responding or error codes won't clear, a faulty control board is often the issue. Replacing the board is almost always cheaper than buying a new microwave.
Smoke, smell, or poor ventilation
A clogged grease filter or a saturated charcoal filter can cause smoke buildup and odors — especially on over-the-range models. Swapping out these filters is one of the easiest microwave fixes there is, and we keep them in stock.

“I was not certain how to go about getting parts for my oven that had failed about 2 months ago and I was stressing out over how to get the parts for an oven that I hadn’t seen locally. Thankfully YAP in Piedmont was there to save the day. Morgan was very helpful and even called …”
Do you stock microwave parts for the brands sold at the Piedmont Walmart and local appliance stores?
Yep — we carry parts for Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Maytag, and KitchenAid, which covers the overwhelming majority of microwaves sold around here. If you bought it locally, there's a good chance we've got what you need on the shelf.
How do I know if it's the door switch or the door latch causing my microwave not to start?
If the door feels loose or the latch tab is visibly broken, start with the door latch. If the door closes firmly but the microwave still won't run, one of the door switches has likely failed — most microwaves have two or three of them wired in series.
Is it safe to replace a high-voltage capacitor myself?
It can be, but you have to discharge the capacitor before touching anything — they store enough voltage to cause serious injury even after the microwave is unplugged. If you're not comfortable with that step, bring the microwave to a tech.
How often should I replace the grease filter and charcoal filter?
Grease filters should be cleaned monthly and replaced every six to twelve months depending on how much you cook. Charcoal filters aren't washable — plan on swapping those out every six months or so.
What do I need to bring in to make sure I get the right part?
Your model number is all we really need — it's usually on a label inside the door frame. Snap a photo of it before you head over and The YAP Dude can have your part pulled before you even walk up to the counter.
