Where do I find the model number on my ice maker or refrigerator?
On most refrigerators, the model and serial number tag is inside the fresh-food compartment, check the left or right wall near the top, or along the door frame. On standalone or under-counter ice makers, look on the back panel or inside the door opening along the bottom edge. If the sticker has worn off, snap a photo of whatever numbers are still visible and text it to us, we can usually cross-reference it.
Is it worth repairing my ice maker, or should I just replace the whole fridge?
For most built-in ice maker assemblies, the repair math works in your favor as long as you're dealing with one failed component, a water inlet valve or harvest module typically runs $20, $80 in parts, which is a fraction of a new appliance. Where it stops making sense is when the refrigerator itself is over 12 to 15 years old and you've already replaced two or three ice maker components in the last year. At that point, you're maintaining a machine that's ready to retire.
Are ice maker parts universal, or do they have to match my specific model?
Most ice maker components are model-specific, and this is one appliance where getting it wrong is expensive, the wrong harvest fork pitch or the wrong inlet valve flow rate can cause exactly the problem you were trying to fix. OEM parts matched to your model number are always the safest call. The exception is generic water line tubing and some inlet valve braided supply lines, where standard sizing usually works fine.
What should I bring to the counter when I come in for ice maker parts?
Bring your full model number and, if you can, a photo of the part you pulled out, especially for harvest forks, ice molds, and control modules where part numbers are sometimes stamped right on the component. Are there any safety concerns I should know before working on my ice maker?
Ice makers are 120V appliances in most residential fridges, so unplug the refrigerator before you pull any components, don't just switch it off at the control panel. If you're working on a commercial Scotsman or under-counter unit with a built-in compressor, treat it the same way you'd treat any refrigeration system: capacitors in the control board can hold a charge even after power is disconnected, so discharge them before you handle the board.
