Where is the model number on my dryer?
On most dryers, the model number sticker is on the inside of the door frame, open the door and look along the left or right edge of the cabinet opening. If it's not there, check the back panel near the power cord or, on older Maytag and Kenmore units, inside the control console. Text or photograph it before you come in; that number is the only way to guarantee you leave with the right part.
How do I decide whether to repair or replace my dryer?
The rule of thumb most appliance techs use: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new machine, replacement starts to make financial sense. A dryer heating element or drive belt almost never crosses that line, those repairs typically run well under a hundred dollars in parts. Where it gets closer is a failed motor or control board on an older unit; bring us the model number and we can give you a straight answer on the part cost so you can do the math yourself.
Are dryer parts universal, or do I need an exact match?
Most dryer parts are not universal, even within the same brand. A heating element for a Whirlpool electric dryer built in 2015 may not fit the same brand's 2022 model because wattage, bracket position, and connector type all changed. Drum rollers and idler pulleys are the one category where some cross-compatibility exists, but even there you want the OEM part number verified against your model. Guessing on a thermal fuse or thermostat can cause recurring failures or a safety issue.
What should I bring to the counter at YAP?
Your model number and serial number, period. If you already pulled the broken part, bring it along as a visual reference, but the number is what actually gets you the right replacement. If you have a photo of the wiring harness or bracket where the part sits, that helps us confirm fitment in about thirty seconds. You don't need to bring the whole dryer.
Are there any safety risks I should know about before I start a dryer repair?
For electric dryers, unplug the unit completely before touching anything inside, a 240-volt circuit is genuinely dangerous, and the start capacitor near the motor can hold a charge even after the power is cut, so discharge it before handling. Gas dryers add one more step: shut off the gas supply valve at the wall before disconnecting any burner components, and check for the smell of gas before you power the machine back on. If you smell gas after reassembly, stop, ventilate the space, and call your gas company. Neither repair is beyond a confident DIYer, but skipping those steps is how people get hurt.
