Your Frigidaire ice maker is spitting out sad little half-cubes that look like they gave up halfway through, and honestly, same. But this is a fixable problem, and you probably don't need a tech.
What's Actually Going On
When your Frigidaire ice maker produces small ice, hollow ice cubes, or weird misshapen blobs instead of solid full cubes, the culprit is almost always a water flow problem. The ice maker mold needs a precise amount of water delivered at the right pressure to fill out a complete cube. When that fill cycle gets short-changed, you get the frozen equivalent of a sad, deflated balloon.
The part doing that water delivery job is the water inlet valve, in Frigidaire refrigerators, that's part number 241734001. This valve is an electrically operated solenoid valve that opens on command, lets water flow from your supply line into the ice maker, then closes again. Over time, the solenoid coils weaken, mineral deposits clog the internal screen, or the valve body just starts to fail. The result? It opens partway, flows slow, and your ice maker gets a half-fill every cycle.
Here's what makes this sneaky: the ice maker itself isn't broken. It's doing its job perfectly, freezing whatever water showed up. If only a little water arrives, you get a little (or hollow) cube. A lot of DIYers replace the whole ice maker assembly chasing this problem when a $30-ish water inlet valve was the actual issue the whole time. Don't be that person, fam.
The Fix
Before you order anything, do a quick sanity check on your water supply line pressure. Low house water pressure (under 20 PSI) can mimic a bad valve. If pressure is fine, here's how to tackle the 241734001 replacement:
- Unplug the refrigerator. Non-negotiable. Always.
- Shut off the water supply line to the fridge at the wall valve.
- Pull the fridge away from the wall and locate the water inlet valve, it's typically at the lower rear of the unit where the supply line connects.
- Disconnect the water lines from the valve. Have a towel ready; residual water will drip.
- Unplug the electrical harness connectors from the solenoid terminals.
- Remove the mounting screws and pull the old valve free.
- Install the new 241734001 valve, connect the water lines, plug in the harness, mount it back up.
- Restore water and power, then give the ice maker a full cycle (about 90 minutes to 2 hours) to confirm full, solid cubes are coming out.
Pro tip: while you're back there, inspect that supply line screen for mineral buildup. A clogged screen can cause the same restricted-flow symptoms even with a brand new valve.
When to Call YAP vs. DIY
DIY this one. Replacing a water inlet valve is one of the more approachable fridge repairs out there, a screwdriver, a towel, and 30 minutes is all it takes. The 241734001 is a direct OEM replacement for a wide range of Frigidaire and Electrolux refrigerators, so compatibility is rarely an issue.
Call YAP if you've replaced the valve and you're still getting small or hollow ice cubes, at that point we'll talk through whether the ice maker module itself, the water pressure, or something else in the fill cycle is the real problem.
