What's Actually Going On

That top section of the agitator isn't supposed to spin freely. It's supposed to grip, rotate a little, release, and repeat, that ratcheting motion is what physically moves your clothes around during the wash cycle. The parts doing that gripping are called agitator dogs (yes, that's the real name, and yes, it slaps). They're little plastic pawls that sit inside the agitator cap assembly and act like tiny one-way clutches.

When they're new, those dogs lock into a splined cam and push the upper agitator with each rotation. But they're made of soft plastic on purpose, they're designed to be the sacrificial part. Over time, the teeth wear down, the dogs round off, and instead of gripping, they just... skip. You'll hear that clicking or spinning-free sound and immediately know something's wrong. The agitator isn't locked up or broken in any dramatic way. It's just stripped of the little teeth that made it work.

This is one of the most common Maytag agitator not moving complaints we hear at the shop, and the fix is almost embarrassingly simple. You don't need to pull the machine apart. The Fix

Here's how the agitator dogs replacement goes down:

  1. Unplug the washer. Always. Non-negotiable.
  2. Pull the fabric softener dispenser out of the top of the agitator (it just lifts out, no tools yet).
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver to pop the dust cap in the center of the agitator barrel.
  4. Remove the bolt underneath (usually a 7/16" socket) and pull the top agitator section straight up off the shaft.
  5. Flip it over. You'll see the cam and the worn-out dogs right there, probably rounded smooth as river rocks.
  6. Swap in the new dogs from kit 21352320, seat the new cam, and snap the cap back on.
  7. Drop the agitator back down, reinstall the bolt, and replace the fabric softener cup.
  8. Plug it back in, run a test cycle, and watch that top barrel actually move clothes for the first time in who knows how long.

Seriously, the whole job requires a screwdriver and one socket. If you can change a battery, you can do this repair.
