What's Actually Going On

First, breathe. You didn't break it by changing the filter, probably. When a Whirlpool water dispenser stops working right after a filter swap, one of three things is going on: the filter isn't seated correctly and is blocking flow, the door switch has given up, or the water inlet valve has finally called it quits. Let's work through these in order from easiest to most involved.

The filter-seating issue is the quick-win check. Pop the filter out and reinstall it slowly, making sure it clicks fully into place. Some Whirlpool models also need you to flush 2 to 3 gallons through after a new filter before pressure normalizes. The Fix

Here's how to diagnose and repair this step by step:

1. Check filter seating first. Remove and firmly re-seat the water filter. Flush a few gallons. Still nothing? Move on.
2. Test the door switch. Locate the dispenser paddle switch on the inside of the door panel. Use a multimeter set to continuity mode. Press the paddle, you should see continuity when depressed, open circuit when released. No continuity when pressed? That switch is toast.
3. Replace the door switch. This is usually a 15-minute repair. Pry off the dispenser panel cover (most Whirlpool models use just a couple of Phillips screws or snap clips), disconnect the wire harness, swap the switch, reassemble. Boom.
4. If the switch checks out, test the water inlet valve. The water inlet valve sits at the back lower section of the fridge where the water supply line connects. It's an electrically-controlled solenoid valve, when it fails, the Whirlpool water inlet valve simply doesn't open, and you get zero water at the dispenser. A failed valve won't hum when the dispenser is triggered, or may hum but not flow.
5. Replace the water inlet valve. Unplug the fridge, shut off the water supply, disconnect the supply line and the wire harness, swap the valve, reconnect everything, and restore power. Test slowly, watch for leaks at the fitting before closing everything back up.
