What's Actually Going On

The Bosch E18 error is your washer's way of saying it can't drain fast enough — or at all. E18 is a drain fault code, and before you panic-order parts, know this: about half the time, the fix costs you exactly zero dollars. The other half? You're looking at a pump replacement, which is still totally manageable.

Your Bosch washer drains through a pump filter (also called the coin trap) and then through the drain pump itself. When the filter gets packed with lint, coins, hair ties, or that mystery sock that went AWOL six months ago, the drain pump can't move water efficiently. The machine times out, throws E18, and leaves you with a swamp drum. Start with the filter every single time — it's behind a small access panel on the lower front of the machine. Twist it counterclockwise, have a towel ready (seriously, have a towel ready), and pull out whatever horrors live inside.

If you clean the filter and the Bosch washer not draining problem comes right back, or if you can hear the pump humming but nothing is moving, that's your sign the drain pump itself has given up the ghost.   1. Cut the power. Unplug the machine or kill the breaker. Non-negotiable.
  2. Drain manually. Use the small emergency drain hose next to the filter cap — aim it into a shallow pan and drain in stages.
  3. Clean the pump filter. Twist it out, rinse it under hot water, and check the filter housing for debris. Reinstall snug.
  4. Run a drain/spin cycle. If it completes without E18, you're done. Go live your life.
  5. If E18 returns, replace the drain pump. You'll need Bosch drain pump 00144978 — this is the correct pump for a wide range of Bosch front-load washers. Pull the front or rear panel (model dependent), disconnect the two drain hoses and the wiring harness, swap the pump, and button it back up.
