What's Actually Going On
When both the ice maker and the water dispenser quit together, that's actually a helpful clue, bro. Those two functions share the same water inlet valve — a solenoid-controlled valve that opens to let water flow into the fridge when it gets an electrical signal. If only the ice maker stopped working but your dispenser is fine, you're looking at a different problem (more on that in a second). But when both go out simultaneously? The water inlet valve is the prime suspect and you should start there before touching anything else.
The water inlet valve on most Frigidaire side-by-sides sits at the back of the unit near the bottom. It's a straightforward part — two solenoids, one for the ice maker fill tube and one for the door dispenser. Over time these valves fail from mineral buildup, a burned solenoid coil, or just normal wear. When one solenoid goes, it usually takes the whole valve with it. The good news is this is a very DIY-friendly repair and the part itself is reasonably priced — we're talking somewhere in the $40–$70 range depending on your exact Frigidaire model.
Now — if your dispenser is still working and only the Frigidaire ice maker is not working, that shifts the diagnosis toward the ice maker module itself. The module is the brain of the ice maker assembly; it controls the harvest cycle, the motor, and the water fill timing. Ice maker module replacement is a bigger job than swapping a valve, and the parts run higher. Don't jump to that repair until you've ruled out the valve. Misdiagnosis is expensive.
The Fix
Here's how to diagnose and replace the water inlet valve on your Frigidaire side-by-side:
- Unplug the refrigerator. Not negotiable. Water and electricity.
- Pull the fridge away from the wall and locate the water inlet valve on the lower back panel — it'll have a water supply line coming into it and two outlet tubes going up into the fridge.
- Check for power to the valve. With a multimeter set to AC volts, have someone trigger the dispenser while you test the solenoid terminals. Getting voltage but no water flow? The valve is bad. No voltage reaching the valve? You might have a control board issue, so don't buy parts yet.
- Test solenoid resistance. With the fridge unplugged, each solenoid coil should read roughly 200–500 ohms. An open circuit (OL on your meter) means that coil is burned out.
- If the valve is confirmed bad, shut off the water supply line, disconnect the inlet tube and outlet tubes, unplug the wiring harness, and remove the mounting screws. Install the new water inlet valve in reverse order.
- Restore water and power, run a dispenser test, and wait about 24 hours for the ice maker to complete its first full cycle.
