Your Whirlpool dryer has been squealing like a car with no brakes, and you've been putting off dealing with it. We get it. But here's the thing — that noise is almost always one tiny part, and you can fix it yourself in about an hour.
What's actually going on
That loud squealing or thumping you're hearing throughout every single cycle? Nine times out of ten, that's your idler pulley throwing a fit. The idler pulley is a small spring-loaded wheel that keeps constant tension on the drive belt wrapped around your drum. Without it doing its job, the belt would just flop around uselessly. When the pulley's bearing wears out — and it does, especially after a few years of daily use — it starts to squeal, grind, or thump as the drum spins.
On Whirlpool dryers, this is genuinely one of the most common repairs we see. The pulley rides on a plastic bracket and spins thousands of times per cycle, so it's not a question of if it wears out, it's when. A lot of people hear that Whirlpool dryer noise and immediately panic that it's the motor. It's almost never the motor. Check the idler pulley first, every time.
Here's a quick way to tell: if the squealing is consistent from the moment the drum starts spinning and doesn't change with load size, you're looking at a mechanical friction issue — not an electrical one. That points straight at the idler pulley, and possibly the drum support rollers while you're in there (more on that in a sec).
The fix
The part you need is WPW10547292 — the Whirlpool idler pulley. We stock it here at YAP in Piedmont. Call or text 405-876-8100 to confirm we've got it on the shelf before you make the drive.
Here's how the dryer idler pulley replacement goes:
- Unplug the dryer. Non-negotiable. Do this first, do this always.
- Pull the dryer away from the wall and remove the back panel or front panel depending on your model — most Whirlpool front-load style dryers give you access from the front by removing the door panel and then the bulkhead.
- Note how the drive belt is routed before you touch anything. Take a photo on your phone. Seriously, do this.
- Release the belt tension by pushing the idler pulley toward the motor to create slack, then slip the belt off the pulley and the motor shaft.
- Slide the old idler pulley off its bracket. It just pops off — there's no screw holding it on most models.
- Snap the new WPW10547292 onto the bracket. You'll feel it seat.
- Re-route the belt using that photo you took. Belt goes around the drum, under the idler pulley, and around the motor shaft in a zigzag pattern.
- Reassemble, plug back in, run a cycle. Silence. Beautiful, beautiful silence.
Pro tip: While you've got the drum out, check the drum support rollers. If they're worn flat or feel rough when you spin them by hand, replace those too. You're already in there — don't put the dryer back together just to open it up again in six months.
