What's Actually Going On

That screech-then-stop combo is almost always a failing idler pulley — and on Frigidaire dryers, the culprit is part 134792700. The idler pulley is a spring-loaded wheel that keeps constant tension on the drive belt as the drum spins. When it's working right, you never think about it. When it starts going bad, the bearing inside the pulley wears out and starts grinding against the axle. That's your squeal.

Here's the thing about the Frigidaire idler pulley specifically: it doesn't usually fail all at once. It teases you. First you get the squealing noise — especially at the start of a cycle or when the drum is under load. Then the pulley seizes up enough that it can't keep tension on the belt anymore. The Fix

Here's how to knock this out:

1. Unplug the dryer. Non-negotiable. Don't be that person.
2. Remove the front panel. On most Frigidaire front-loaders, you'll pop a few screws along the top panel, then the front panel drops down once you release the spring clips. Your specific model may vary slightly — check your model tag.
3. Lift the drum out. Once the front panel is off, you can lift the drum up and forward. Support it or have someone help — it's heavier than it looks.
4. Locate the idler pulley assembly. It's on the motor mount bracket at the bottom of the cabinet, tensioning the belt around the drum and motor pulley.
5. Release the belt tension and slip the old pulley off. Note how the belt is routed before you remove it. Seriously — take a phone photo right now.
6. Snap in the new 134792700 idler pulley. It should seat firmly on the bracket post. If it wobbles, it's not seated right.
7. Reroute the drive belt using your photo as a reference. Belt goes around the drum, then in a zig-zag around the idler pulley and motor pulley.
8. Reassemble, plug in, run a test cycle. Listen for silence. Beautiful, beautiful silence.
