Whirlpool Dishwasher Won't Start? Here's How to Tell If It's the Control Board or the Door Latch

Your Whirlpool dishwasher is sitting there full of dirty dishes and it absolutely will not start — and now you're spiraling trying to figure out if you need a $15 door latch or a $150 control board.

What's actually going on

Here's the deal: when a Whirlpool dishwasher won't start, two parts are almost always the first suspects — the door latch assembly and the main control board. They can produce nearly identical symptoms (press Start, nothing happens), which is exactly why people end up on Reddit at midnight convinced they need to replace everything. You don't. You just need to think through it logically.

The door latch is the gatekeeper. Your dishwasher literally cannot run if the control board doesn't receive a signal from the latch saying "hey, the door is closed and locked." If that latch assembly is worn, cracked, or the microswitch inside it has given up, the board never gets the green light and the whole machine just sits there looking at you. This is the most common reason a Whirlpool dishwasher won't start, and it's also the cheapest fix — so you always check this one first.

The control board is the brain. If the board itself has a failed relay, burnt solder joint, or fried component, it can receive the door-closed signal just fine and still do absolutely nothing. Board failures are less common than latch failures, but they do happen — especially on machines that have taken a power surge or are getting up there in age. The telltale sign is that everything else on the machine seems weirdly dead too: no lights responding correctly, no sounds at all, or a panel that's gone completely dark.

The fix

Work through this in order. Don't skip ahead and buy the expensive part first.

1. Check the door latch visually. Open the door and look at the latch mechanism on the top of the door. Is it visibly cracked, bent, or not catching properly when you close it? That's your answer right there.
2. Listen when you close the door. A healthy latch clicks firmly and the panel lights up ready to run. If you close the door and hear nothing — no click, no response from the panel — the latch microswitch is almost certainly gone.
3. Test the latch with a multimeter. If you have one, pull the inner door panel, disconnect the latch's wiring harness, and test the microswitches for continuity. No continuity when the latch is engaged = bad latch. This is a dead-simple test.
4. Replace the door latch assembly first if it fails any of the above. The Whirlpool dishwasher door latch assembly is typically in the $20–$45 range depending on your model. Bring your full model number to the Piedmont shop and we'll pull the right one.
5. If the latch tests good, now look at the control board. Check for visible burn marks, scorched components, or corrosion on the board itself.
