Bosch Refrigerator E01 Error? Here's Why Your Fridge Temp Is Going Haywire

What's Actually Going On

The Bosch refrigerator E01 error is your fridge's way of screaming that it's lost trust in its own temperature readings. Specifically, E01 points to a fault in the temperature sensing circuit, and nine times out of ten, the culprit is the thermistor (also called a temp sensor). This little component is basically a resistor whose resistance changes with temperature, and it feeds real-time data to the control board so the compressor and cooling system know what to do. When it fails, that communication breaks down, and you get wild temperature swings or a fridge that just parks itself at one extreme and refuses to budge.

Here's where people get tripped up: they see "control board" in the error description and immediately assume they need a $200+ board replacement. Slow your roll, fam. The control board is only throwing the E01 code because it's receiving garbage data from the thermistor, not necessarily because the board itself is cooked. The board is the messenger shooting the flare; the thermistor is usually the one that's actually on fire. Always diagnose the sensor first.

The Bosch fridge thermistor typically sits inside the refrigerator compartment, clipped to the evaporator cover or tucked near the air duct. Over time, it can fail from moisture exposure, physical vibration, or just plain old wear. When resistance drifts out of spec, the control board can't make sense of what it's reading, throws the Bosch refrigerator temperature error, and starts making bad decisions, or no decisions, about cooling.

The Fix

Here's how to knock this out without throwing parts at the wall:

1. Pull everything out of the fridge and locate the thermistor. On most Bosch models it's accessible once you remove the interior back panel or evaporator cover, usually just a few screws.
2. Disconnect the thermistor connector and test it with a multimeter. At room temperature (~70°F), a healthy thermistor typically reads somewhere in the 5,000 to 10,000 ohm range depending on the model. 3. If resistance is way off, open, or shorted, that thermistor is done. You need a replacement thermistor for your specific Bosch model. Part numbers vary by refrigerator series, so bring your full model number to the shop.
4. Swap the new thermistor in, reconnect the harness, and button everything back up.
5. Clear the error code by unplugging the fridge for 60 seconds, then plug back in.
6. Monitor temps for 24 hours. If the E01 comes back after a confirmed good thermistor install, then you start looking at the Bosch refrigerator control board.
