Whirlpool Gas Oven Won't Light? Your Igniter Is Probably Toast — Here's the Fix

Your Whirlpool gas range is taking forever to light — or just sitting there clicking away like it's got nothing to prove — and your dinner plans are officially on hold.

What's Actually Going On

When a gas oven takes more than 30–90 seconds to light (or flat-out refuses), the igniter is almost always the villain. Here's the deal: the igniter in your Whirlpool gas range does two jobs. It glows hot enough to ignite the gas, AND it acts as a safety valve sensor — the gas won't even open until the igniter draws enough current to prove it's hot. When the igniter gets weak and starts pulling less amperage than it should, the safety valve stays closed. No gas, no flame, no roasted chicken.

A healthy igniter glows bright orange and lights the burner within about 60 seconds. A dying one glows dull orange-red and just... sits there. If yours takes 90 seconds or more to light — or the oven cycles on the igniter over and over without ever catching — you don't have a gas pressure problem or a control board problem. You've got a weak igniter. It's one of the most common Whirlpool gas range igniter failures we see walk through the door here in Piedmont.

The good news? This is one of the easier oven repairs out there. You're looking at part number W10918546, which is Whirlpool's replacement flat-style oven igniter. The Fix

Here's how to swap out the igniter yourself. Turn off the gas supply and unplug the range before you touch anything — no shortcuts on that part.

1. Pull the oven racks out and set them aside. You need a clear floor inside that oven.
2. Remove the oven bottom panel — usually 2 screws at the back lip. Lift the back edge and slide it toward the rear to pop it free.
3. Locate the igniter — it sits on the left side of the burner tube, mounted with two screws (usually 1/4" hex head).
4. Disconnect the wiring harness — it runs through a hole at the back of the oven floor. Gently unplug the connector. Don't yank on the wires.
5. Swap in the new W10918546**** — mount it with the same two screws, plug the harness back in, and route the wire the same way you found it.
6. Replace the oven bottom panel, slide the racks back in, restore power and gas.
7. Test it — set the oven to 350°F and watch the igniter. It should glow bright orange and light within 60 seconds. If it does, you nailed it.

The whole job runs 20–30 minutes with a 1/4" nut driver and a pair of needle-nose pliers. That's it.

DIY it if you're comfortable removing the oven bottom panel and working with a wiring connector — this repair is genuinely beginner-friendly and the W10918546 is straightforward to install.

Call YAP if your igniter glows bright and still won't light consistently — at that point you may be chasing a gas valve or control board issue and you'll want to talk it through before you start ordering parts.
