Your Maytag freezer looks like a snow globe, and everything in the fresh food section is getting soft — that's not a coincidence, and it's not a mystery.

What's Actually Going On

When you've got Maytag fridge frost buildup packed solid around the evaporator coils, the refrigerator's automatic defrost system has stopped doing its job. Modern frost-free fridges run a defrost cycle every 8-12 hours, firing a heating element to melt off any ice that's accumulated on those coils. When that element fails, frost just keeps stacking up, cycle after cycle, until the coils are completely buried.

Here's the part that throws people off — the freezer still feels cold. It is cold. Too cold, actually. The problem is that airflow from the freezer into the fresh food section is being blocked by that wall of ice. The evaporator fan can't push cold air through a frozen-solid block of coils, so your refrigerator compartment creeps up to 50°F while your ice cream stays frozen and you have no idea the defrost system is dead.

Before you blame the defrost thermostat or the control board, check the defrost heater first. It's the most common failure point by a wide margin, and on most Maytag bottom-freezer and top-freezer models, it's a straightforward swap. The part you're after is WPW10225581 — the Defrost Heater Assembly — and it fits a long list of Maytag, Whirlpool, and Kenmore fridges that share the same platform.

The Fix

Here's how to knock this out yourself on a weekend morning:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator. Not negotiable. You're working near water and electrical components.
  2. Empty and remove the freezer contents and shelving. Get everything out so you have clear access to the back wall panel.
  3. Remove the rear freezer panel. Usually 4-6 screws. Set it aside carefully — the evaporator coils are right behind it.
  4. Defrost the coils manually. If they're packed in ice (and they will be), use a hair dryer on low or just let it sit with the door open. Do NOT stab at the ice. Take your time.
  5. Disconnect the old defrost heater. The WPW10225581 assembly clips or screws onto the evaporator coil frame and has a wiring harness connector. Note how it's routed before you pull it.
  6. Install the new heater assembly. Clip it in, reconnect the harness, and make sure it's seated the same way the old one was.
  7. Reassemble in reverse. Replace the panel, shelving, and food. Plug it back in and give it 24 hours to stabilize before you decide if the temps are right.

Parts pricing on WPW10225581 can vary, but you're typically looking at a fraction of what a service call costs — and if you're handy enough to change your own air filter, you can do this repair.
